Forgotten Delaware Visits the Peoples Railway 6th Street Powerhouse

In the City of Wilmington, Delaware a trolley company called the Peoples Railway built a new powerhouse in 1901. By 1928 the powerhouse was listed as derelict and missing its roof. The building was later taken over by Delaware Electric Power when they took over operation of the various trolley lines in Wilmington.

1These views show the old powerhouse now used by a local appliance dealer. The higher peak housed the boilers and the lower one housed the engine room. The space to left of the building was where the trolley barn was located and has since been removed. The photo on the right shows cobblestones still in the street at the driveway to the side of the powerhouse. These are without a doubt from the trolley era in Wilmington. This view shows the West side of the powerhouse where the coal unloading area was located. Railroad tracks of the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad ran down Webb Street in Wilmington for 6 city blocks to deliver coal to the powerhouse. The layout of the buildings and the railroad track is visible in the map in the center view. The street running track of the B&O Railroad is shown in the map on the right. The Peoples Railway office and shop are still intact. Click here to see the photos of these buildings.
