The roundhouse at Wilmington Shops was built by the Pennsylvania Railroad. Records show that a large one was built in 1904, we are not sure if this is the 1904 roundhouse or a later one. Please Email Forgotten Delaware if you know anything about the history of the roundhouse. It fell out of use in the 1970's and by the 1980's the turntable was removed and filled in. Presently it is on the short list to be demolished and is fenced off. Wilmington Shops is still a major repair facility used by Amtrak to repair locomotives and the property is patrolled and off limits. These photos were shot while driving past when entering the property on official business. Click on the photos for a larger picture.
The roundhouse has seen better days and will soon be gone.
The coal tower still stands by and will likely fall as well.
